Games Focus Area Chair

Overview

The Games Focus Area Chair compiles a program exploring issues and innovative uses of computer graphics and interactive techniques in the gaming industry. The chair interacts with contributors on formats, timing and other requirements, and manages on-site content.

The SIGGRAPH Games Focus Area Chair is responsible for the planning, selection process, and implementation of the annual conference with an eye towards Games. The Games Focus Area Chair works closely with the Conference Chair, the Conference Event Director, other volunteers, and contractors to produce an interesting and successful Games Program.

  • able to delegate responsibility and mentor team members as well as the next year’s Games Focus Area Chair
  • deadline-driven; able to organize and respond quickly
  • able to devote the necessary time
  • must have connections within the Gaming community to help recruit content
  • participated in past SIGGRAPH Conferences as a contributor, juror, and/or subcommittee member and/or past participant

Specific Responsibilities

The following list is a “high-level” view of the specific responsibilities associated with serving as a Games Focus Area Chair. The list is organized under general categories of responsibility.

Strategic

  • Participate in strategic planning for the SIGGRAPH Conference
  • Create a strategic direction for the Games Content including technical focus, emphasis areas, and new initiatives

Management

  • Provide information to accepted submitters regarding formatting, timing, and requirements
  • Work to create a presentation schedule
  • Work with contractors to ensure on-site presentation facilities are appropriate

Financial

  • Work with the Conference Chair and Event Director to prepare preliminary and final budgets for the Games Program
  • Manage the Games Program budget

Publications

  • Develop the Games section of the Call for Participation
  • Review copies of promotional materials and publications to ensure accurate information
  • Along with the General Submissions Chair Assist the Publications Chair in the collection of electronic versions of accepted presentations for both printed and CD-ROM publication

Communication

  • Report regularly to the Conference Chair and Event Director on the status of the Educators Program
  • Facilitate and participate in timely communication with the contributors to provide direction and solve problems
  • Produce a final report by the wrapup meeting in September describing the Educators Program, changes from previous years, and lessons learned

Meetings

  • Attend and participate in all required conference committees meetings
  • Attend the Unified Jury and Scheduling meetings to select a wide variety of presentations for the Games Program
