Art Gallery: Synthesis - Toward A New Perception
In this era of globalisation and multiple cultures, technology is prevalent in all our lives. We now experience fusion and intersections of media, society, and culture at an ever-increasing pace. This is also reflected in the various fields of hybrid art, which merges two or more types of media or senses.
In Asia, when we think of our creativity and its effect on new technologies and art, we often transform, harmonise, or synthesise disciplines, media, and interfaces. The results blend historical, traditional media or technology with contemporary approaches. Often the works express different senses of cultures, old and new.
The SIGGRAPH Asia 2008 Art Gallery explores these new perspectives under the theme of Synthesis - Toward A New Perception. As part of the first realisation of SIGGRAPH in Asia, it is also closely related to the Emerging Technologies programme, which will be presented under the same theme.
The Art Gallery presents art that transforms, melds, and transcends current Asian paradigms. This international, multi-cultural festival of creativity showcases works in all media. We encourage participation by artists whose works include (but are not limited to) hybrid formats such as text-literature collaborations, ubiquitous sounds, zero-gravity-space art, still images, printed media, time-based work, installations and environments, interactive media, digital comics, digital art in 2D and 3D, digital communities, mobile media, digital art performances, transformations, scientific exploration, and theoretical art papers.
We welcome works that especially deal with fusions, intersections, transformations, and paradigm shifts from Asia to the world; works that provoke contemplation, address contemporary issues, and interactively engage viewers in discovery and stimulate intellectual adventure and creativity.
Art Gallery: Synthesis - Toward A New Perception will explore these areas, among others:
- How new-media artists employ the tools of fusion and intersection.
- How globalisation and localisation affect the works artists create.
- How new tools and technologies contribute to presentation of cultural diversity.
All submissions will be juried. International works are highly encouraged. All forms of digitally mediated work are invited, as well as works created in traditional media that comment on technology.
The Art Gallery jury will review submissions based on the following criteria:
- Relevance to the SIGGRAPH Asia 2008 themes.
- Unique and creative uses of media or technology.
- Depth of aesthetic and critical exploration.
- Quality of accompanying technology or artist statement.
The submission deadline is 20 June 2008. The jury's decisions will be announced in early August.
In addition to juried submissions, the Art Gallery will present curated works that showcase new perceptions, new media, and advanced technologies.
