Many conferences are focussed on specific aspects of HCI, hypermedia, computer science, etc. and bring together leading experts in a particular field or sometimes on a specific technology. At such large conferences students are often marginalized or relegated to poster sessions. The workshops, symposia, etc., are not a big scale and aim to promote dialogue between established professors and graduate students working on new directions. Hence topics from the whole range of HCI, multimedia, software, etc. are welcomed.
Since its formation in 1996, the ACM SIGGRAPH Cartographic Visualization Project has held a Birds-of-a-Feather session at the annual SIGGRAPH conference. This year is no exception. The ACM SIGGRAPH Cartographic Visualization session at SIGGRAPH 2016 will take place at the top of the week, in the Anaheim Convention Center.

1. What do you do, and how long have you been doing it?
I have been a computer graphics professor at a German university since 1993.
2. What was your first job?
The HCI-Europe conferences have its roots in the WSCG conferences (http://www.wscg.eu) held since 1992 in Plzen, Czech Republic every year, with special HCI sessions oriented to Computer Graphics, Visualization and Computer Vision. Due to growing demand in Human Computer Interfaces, it was decided to initiate HCI-Europe conferences as independent conferences.
EG VCBM is now an annual event addressing state-of-the-art visual computing research with a strong focus on applications in biology and medicine. EG VCBM is unique, as it provides a highly interdisciplinary forum for experts from computer graphics, visualization, computer vision, visual analytics, human computer interfaces and end users from biology and medicine jointly working on next generation visual computing solutions for healthcare and the biotechnology sector.
