In Memoriam: John Staudhammer

It is with deep sadness that we communicate that ACM SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics pioneer John Staudhammer has died. John was a noted American Electrical Engineer and a devoted educator. He was born in 1932 in Budapest, Hungary, and his family emigrated to the USA in 1949. A member of ACM SIGGRAPH and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, John served as senior editor-in-chief of the IEEE Computer Graphics and Application magazine from 1987-1990. He received the IEEE Distinguished Service award in 1990, was a Life Senior Member (1995) and Golden Core Member (1996).

2017 Election Slate Announced

The ACM SIGGRAPH election slate for 2017 has been announced. Below are the candidates for the positions of President, Vice President and Director-at-Large. Voting will begin in June, with the new EC members taking office in September.

Grants Available to Attend ACM Turing Award Celebration

The ACM A.M. Turing Award, often referred to as the “Nobel Prize of Computing,” carries a $1 million prize with financial support provided by Google, Inc. It is named for Alan M. Turing, the British mathematician who articulated the mathematical foundation and limits of computing and who was a key contributor to the Allied cryptoanalysis of the German Enigma cipher during World War II.

Call for Submissions to Immersive Expressions: Virtual Reality on the Web

The ACM SIGGRAPH Digital Arts Community is seeking projects for an online exhibition exploring the web browser as a medium for creative works of virtual reality. The exhibition, called "Immersive Expressions: Virtual Reality on the Web" will open in May 2017. Submissions to the show will be accepted until March 7, 2017, with notifications for accepted works going out three weeks after the deadline.

In Memoriam: David Arnold

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of David Arnold, longtime ACM SIGGRAPH member and Fellow of the Eurographics Association.

According to a communication from the Cultural Informatics Research Group at the University of Brighton, where David served as Director of Research Initiatives and Dean of Brighton Doctoral College, he passed away suddenly on the night of October 25, 2016.

2016 VIEW Awards Announces Winners

The 2016 VIEW Award winners have been announced. Citing director Chen Chen’s ability to create an expressive story without dialog, a story with layers of meaning, and an animation style that is perfect for the design, the jury awarded “Vieil Ours” (Old Bear) the 2016 VIEW Award. Chen Chen will receive the first prize of 2000 Euros. The 11:32 minute film was produced in 2016 by Citron Bien and distributed by Yummy Films. Pierre Dron was the producer.

Visual Effects Society Names Ken Ralston Recipient of VES Lifetime Achievement Award

On October 20, 2016, the Visual Effects Society (VES), the industry’s professional global honorary society, named multiple Academy Award®-winning visual effects pioneer Ken Ralston as the recipient of the VES Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his enormous contributions to filmed entertainment. The award will be presented at the 15th Annual VES Awards on February 7, 2017 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
