Carto Project

Summary of July 30, 2003 - Carto BOF Meeting at SIGGRAPH 2003

Theresa-Marie Rhyne

ACM SIGGRAPH Carto Project Director

On Wednesday of SIGGRAPH 2003, the ACM SIGGRAPH Carto Project held a Birds of a Feather session to report on 2003 activities and to demonstrate future projects underway. As the Carto Project is a collaborative effort between both the International Cartographic Association (ICA)'s Commission on Visualization and Virtual Environments and the GeoVRML Working Group of the Web3D Consortium, update on these efforts were also provided.

Theresa-Marie Rhyne, ACM SIGGRAPH Carto Project Director, highlighted efforts of the ACM SIGGRAPH Carto Project along with the recent work of the ICA's Commission on Visualization & Virtual Environments. She noted that the next meeting of this ICA Commission is scheduled for August 5 - 7, 2003 in Stellenbosch, South Africa and will be held jointly with the ICA Commission on Maps and the Internet, (http://linserv1.ikr.tuwien.ac.at/stellenbosch/#Anchor-39626).

Next, Chris Thorne and Viveka Weiley demonstrated work from their "Open Source Geospatial VR Project" currently under develoment. Their web site is located at: (http://www.ping.com.au/3map). Chris commented on various enhancements he would like to see to GeoVRML and X3D that resulted in a lively discussion on how to approach these concerns.

Justin Couch then reviewed efforts to integrate GeoVRML open source code into X3D. This was an excellent follow-on to issues highlighted by Chris Thorne. Don Brutzman highlighted X3D GeoVRML exemplar updates that are available online at: (http://www.web3D.org/TaskGroups/x3d/translation/examples/GeoSpatial/chapter .html).

Next, James Neushul demonstrated new work under development at the Naval PostGraduate School the builds upon earlier GeoVRML work initiated by Martin Reddy while Martin was at SRI. Martin Reddy has since moved on to Pixar and is no longer Chair of GeoVRML Working Group.

The current Chair of the GeoVRML Working Group, Mike McCann, was unable to attend SIGGRAPH 2003. Kevin Gomes, a colleague of Mike's at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), filled in given Mike's abscence. During the SIGGRAPH 2003 week, on July 28th, 2003, Mike was able to post an updated installer for Windows (GeoVRML1_1.exe) that includes the GeoVRML 1.1 versions of the GeoProximitySensor and GeoTransform nodes at the (http://www.geovrml.org) web site.

Others attending the ACM SIGGRAPH Carto BOF session then demonstrated various geographic visualization applications they have developed. A lively discussion resulted.

It was agreed to meet again at SIGGRAPH 2004.
