Project Details
- "Pirates! is a mobile, multi-user, location-aware computer game that runs on PDAs and is experienced in physical space. The game world is a fantasy archipelago where each player takes the role of a pirate captain [who must solve missions, make landfall, search for treasure, trade commodities, and battle other pirates at sea]."
- The game is constructed with a client-server architecture. Gamers use a proximity-sensing handheld device that relies upon players' mobility as part of the game. Custom short-range radio beacons distributed throughout the gaming area (and within proximity of each other through the PDAs) trigger interactions and gaming scenarios. Moving between locations is equivalent to sailing between islands in the virtual world.
- "Pirates! was designed to be played in a social setting, encouraging face-to-face interaction between players and non-players alike, and promoting movement and exploration within a defined physical space."
