Project Details

"Proyecto Xochicalco (shó-shee-cal-co) is a sophisticated, networked virtual environments game system that uses the power of this new medium to simultaneously address two application areas: entertainment and education."

The premise is a distributed simulation of an accurately reconstructed environment of Xochicalco, the Aztec/Mayan archeological site where participants explore the historical environment, play the ancient Aztec/Mayan ball game, and interact with a human guide in the virtual environment.

Players use a stereoscopic head-mounted display (HMD) with magnetic tracking sensors for movement and two-way communication features. The simulation runs between three locations (The Edge, SIGGRAPH 94, and the Boston Computer Museum) over the Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) protocol used by the Department of Defense.
