Project Details

The Flogiston chair is a neutral posture chair that supports the body in a minimal-stress posture similar to the posture in zero gravity. It is mounted on a three-degree-of-freedom motion base that uses Pemram thrusters to provide motion. These thrusters are being developed for Flogiston by DDL and Lotus Cars for NASA's SBIR development of the personal motion platform for training astronauts.

In the exhibit, an 8-foot by 5-foot curved HDTV projection screen surrounds the visitor with back-projected real-time imagery. A six channel surround-sound system supplies the audio experience.

The personal-motion platform supplies motion cues and low-frequency vibration to the occupant. The combination of the neutral posture, motion cues, imagery, and sound all provide a sense of floating or flying in cyberspace.
