Project Details
- "DesignSpace" is a prototype of future collaborative design media through a commonly shared virtual space. Among many other interests, this exhibit demonstrates CDR's research to develop devices and interfaces to better map manual skills to data operations.
- DesignSpace exhibits four key emerging technologies - dexterous manipulation (sensing, encoding, and interpreting static poses and dynamic gestures to manipulate data), virtual presence (creating consistent psychological effects to make computer-based media believable and intuitive), telecommunication (access to and transmission of remote information), and auditory display (encoding auditory cues such as localization to present data uniquely)
- In its continuing work, the CDR is interested in supporting the design process so that "problem complexity does not impede creativity, reuse of design knowledge, and human skill."

Remarks
- Projects included with DesignSpace were:
- + Talking Glove - assistive communication device for non-speaking deaf individuals which recognizes American Sign Language (ASL) figure spelling to generate text/synthesized speech
- + CutPlane - a 3D CAD interaction metaphor
- + Virtual Hand - a dynamic simulated hand model driven by the instrumented glove developed for Talking Glove
- + TeleSign - a system for visual expression and manual communication between two or more TeleSign stations across standard low-bandwidth telephone channels
