Director Alfonso Cuarón Honored by Visual Effects Society

Today, the Visual Effects Society announced director Alfonso Cuarón as the recipient of its prestigious Visionary Award. Cuarón was selected for his remarkable achievements in the field of cinematic arts, not the least of which being his pivotal role in the creation of the year's most celebrated film, Gravity.

Richard Williams' The Thief and the Cobbler Screens for the First Time

Canadian animator Richard Williams worked on his film "The Thief and the Cobbler" for nearly three decades, its completion and screening delayed time and time again by production woes and lack of funding. Though some portions of the film were combined with work from other animators and released as “The Princess and the Cobbler” and “Arabian Knight,” to this day, the original version has never been publicly screened.

Today, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the titles of the 10 films that remain in the running for the 86th Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. 

Visual Effects Society Awards Submission Deadline Approaching

The deadline for submissions to the prestigious Visual Effects Society's 12th Annual VES Awards is rapidly approaching. November 22 is the cutoff to upload work for award consideration.

There are 24 categories under which work may be submitted:

How did the digital dinosaurs of "Jurassic Park" make their way into the ground-breaking movie in 1993? On the 20-year anniversary of the film, the digital artists who created the critters will come together in a panel that's sure to be memorable.

Learn the current process of color correction by some of the top people in the field. LA ACM SIGGRAPH & VES have designed this meeting to give you an overview on color science and where it stands today. Lynette Duensing and Jeremy Selan will describe how to analyze a shot for color grading LUT, and Log/linear grades. They will also cover in depth the DI workflows, how to use them.

SIGGRAPH Partners with AMPAS for Special Keynote Session

SIGGRAPH 2013 and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are partnering for a special keynote session--The Marc Davis Lecture Series: Giants' First Steps. Eight distinguished animation film directors share their experiences along complex paths to filmmaking success. This series was established to provide a forum for film experts to explore the challenges of creating animation for feature films. Read more
