The Studio

The Studio is the place for making and creating at SIGGRAPH 2010. It is an amazing space where the latest technologies, experts, and attendees are brought together to create new works, experiment, and collaborate.

We invite you to bring yourselves, technologies, projects, and processes to The Studio to help attendees create something entirely new. Specifically, we are looking for:

  • Kids' Projects. Do you have an interactive project, process, or technology that is hands-on and kid-friendly? Can it inspire some of the toughest critics of new technology? We're looking for short-duration projects that can be accomplished in five minutes or up to one hour by small groups of kids visiting The Studio.

  • New Technologies for Creating. New technologies (or tools) that make, build, transform, and create things. These technologies should provide new ways to acquire data, transform information, or produce tangible results. They will be used in The Studio by attendees from all backgrounds and experience levels. We encourage you to envision how attendees might benefit from learning about, and using, your technology.

    Examples of technologies that have been very successful in past years include: laser-scanning devices, gigapixel imaging systems, motion-capture systems, stop-motion animation software, rapid-prototyping machines, large-format printers, and interactive drawing tools, just to name a few.

  • Off the Beaten Track Technologies. Impractical, homemade, or scary-cool technologies that make, build, or create things. These are the technologies that often fall through the cracks of the mainstream culture but are no less inspiring or valuable. Submit your own creation that presents a new method, technique, or device that puts a whole new spin on things. Anything you submit must be safe, robust, and durable enough to withstand use from attendees throughout the duration of the conference. Examples of past technologies have included 3D virtual sculpting systems, a CNC sand-painting machine, and wearable interactive artworks. Show us what you've got and tell us how attendees could safely use it in The Studio.

Submissions are due by 22:00 UTC/GMT, 18 February 2010.

Log in to the SIGGRAPH Information System, select "Begin a New Submission," and then select "create" for the General Submission form. You will be asked for:

  • Basic information about your submission (page 1)
  • Permissions (page 2)
  • How attendees can use your technology or project to make, build, transform, and/or create things; your project's durability and ease of use; what digital or physical artifacts attendees will be able to create and take home; staffing requirements and whether you able to provide personnel; size and space requirements, computing needs (we encourage you to provide your own computing power); and electrical and networking requirements.
  • A "representative image" suitable for use in the conference web site and promotional materials (page 4)
  • A one-page abstract describing your work (PDF). The abstract should include what the users will see and experience and what is novel about your work (page 4).
  • Optional images and video

Your submission must include the following materials and information:

  • Basic Submission Information: Title of the submission, summary statement (50 words or less), short overview outlining its contribution to the SIGGRAPH community (300 words or less), submission categories and keywords to help ensure your submission is reviewed and juried appropriately, web URL, and contact information.
  • Studio Presentation Format Specifics: How attendees can use your technology or project to make, build, transform, and/or create things; size and space requirements; how many people are needed to assist attendees; whether you able to supply any assistance throughout the conference; computing needs (we encourage you to provide your own computing resources); and electrical and networking requirements.
  • One Representative Image: One image suitable for use in the conference web site and promotional materials. See Representative Image Guidelines.
  • One Page Abstract: A one-page abstract describing your work (PDF). The abstract should include what attendees will see and experience, and what is novel about your work.
  • Optional Images and Video: Maximum six supplementary images and/or a maximum five-minute supplementary video file. We only accept uploaded videos in QuickTime MPEG-4 or DivX Version 6 formats, and the file size should not exceed 100 MB. The file must be uploaded using the online submission system.

Non-native English speakers may use the English Review Service to help improve the text of submissions. Please note that this process takes time, so plan far ahead.

New requirement: All submitters must complete the Submission and Authorization Agreement (formerly the Acceptance Agreement) before the submission deadline. Incomplete submissions will not be reviewed or accepted.

Educator’s Resources Submission option. Those submitting content to a SIGGRAPH conference have the option of donating materials of educational value to ACM SIGGRAPH online resources for the benefit of the education community. Learn more

The Studio is the place for making and creating at SIGGRAPH 2010. Your technology or project MUST meet the following criteria:

  • Can be used by attendees from all backgrounds and levels of expertise.
  • Presents a process, technology, or project that facilitates creating and experimenting.
  • Is very durable and able to withstand use by attendees for the entire duration of the conference.
  • Allows attendees to bring home a digital or physical artifact of their experience.

If your submission meets the above criteria, it will be evaluated based on the following:

  • Benefits to Attendees: How will presenting your technology, process, or project directly benefit attendees? What will they be learning and how can they apply what they learn to their own work?
  • Technical Innovation: Level of technical innovation. Does the project represent a new step forward in graphics and interactive technology?

You will be notified of acceptance or rejection of your proposal during the week of 20 April 2010.

You will be able to update your basic submission information and final materials so they can be included in the conference program and web site. This information needs to be finalized two weeks after acceptance, around 3 May 2010. Please be prepared to deliver your final versions of your information and work on or before that date.

Personnel Support

You are expected to bring sufficient personnel to setup and staff your technology or project throughout the conference. The Studio is open all day, Monday, July 26 through Thursday, July 30. Travel support is not provided. Limited conference registration is available for selected projects.

Networking, Computing, Space, and Supply Needs

You will need to bring your own materials, supplies, and computing power necessary for your project. Network connections are provided. Studio personnel will contact you regarding your space requirements and options.

Shipping of Equipment and Project Supplies

You are responsible for bringing or shipping any necessary equipment to Los Angeles and for return shipment of the equipment. Some financial assistance for shipping may be available for large equipment or projects.

Deadline for all General Submission forms and upload of materials.

Assignment and online review of all General Submissions.

26-29 March

Jury meeting for all General Submissions.

30 March - 19 April

Final selection and scheduling for General Submissions.

20-21 April

Acceptance and scheduling information or rejection notices are sent to all General Submissions submitters.

3 May

Deadline to make any changes to materials for publication.
