Art Gallery

We are looking for exceptional works of art, completed in the last two years, by artists who physically engage technology in their creative process. Our aim is to gather a compelling and varied group of creative projects that relate to the SIGGRAPH 2010 Art Gallery theme: TouchPoint: Haptic Exchange Between Digits.

Art projects appropriate for the TouchPoint theme will likely reference one or more of the following areas of interest:

  • User-involved touch in the experience, production, or creation of the work
  • Unique physical interfaces used by the artist in the creation, generation, and/or manifestation of the work
  • Experience design engaging multiple senses
  • Kinesthetic intelligence and/or physical memory
  • Haptics as the subject of the work, addressing physical relationships with others, with technology, or both.

All forms of digitally mediated work are eligible, as well as work made in traditional media that comments on technology. International projects, three-dimensional works, and kinetic or interactive pieces are encouraged and, if selected, the gallery space will be designed to accommodate them. Works selected for TouchPoint: The Haptic Exchange Between Digits will be published in a special issue of Leonardo, The Journal of the International Society of the Arts, Sciences and Technology. The issue also includes the SIGGRAPH 2010 Art Papers.

Artists and scholars are also encouraged to submit proposals to Talks, Art Papers, and Emerging Technologies that address themes related to TouchPoint.

You may submit up to three projects. Use a separate submission form for each project. Submissions are due by 22:00 UTC/GMT, 7 January 2010.

Log in to the SIGGRAPH Information System, select "Begin a New Submission", and then select "create" for the Art Gallery submission form.

Please review and carefully follow the submission requirements below. Incomplete or wrongly completed submissions will not be considered. For each submission, please complete the following submission requirements:

Page 1 - Information about work:

1. Basic information: title, date of completion, size, weight, and media used, along with installation requirements.

2. A summary description of the work (up to 100 words).

3. An artist's statement indicating the conceptual trajectory of your work, the role technology plays in your creative practice, and how the work you are submitting relates to the TouchPoint theme (up to 300 words). If you are submitting more than one work, the artist's statement should be the same for each (remember: use a separate submission form for each work).

Page 2 - Permissions:

4. Statement of permissions to use the submitted materials, along with any credits needed for presentation and publication (for example, name of photographer and/or owner of an artwork).

5. List of project collaborators (if any).

Page 3 - Images and other visual documentation of work:

6. One representative image suitable for use in the conference web site, conference art catalog, and promotional materials (see image format requirements below).

7. Visual documentation: In addition to a representative image, include up to four visual files for each submission (three images and one video). At a minimum, include one image. Video documentation is expected for installation, kinetic, or interactive works.

Image & video format requirements:

Images need to be formatted as TIFF files. TIFF files need to be 24-bit (RGB 8 bits per channel), uncompressed, and flattened prior to submission (no layers or transparent objects). Files should be saved at a resolution of 266 pixels per inch and approximately seven inches wide. Height may vary to accommodate aspect ratio, but should be no greater than nine inches. Please note that for accepted works, images for publication in Leonardo will be chosen from the TIFFs submitted. Videos need to be formatted as QuickTime (.mov) files of up to two minutes in length and maximum 100 MB.

All entries must be uploaded to the online submission system. No discs or drives will be accepted.

Submissions that are not related to the TouchPoint theme or do not fulfill the submission expectations will not be reviewed.

Non-native English speakers may use the English Review Service to help improve the text of submissions. Please note that this process takes time, so plan far ahead.

New requirement: All submitters must complete the new Submission and Nonexclusive Publication Agreement (formerly the Acceptance Agreement) before the submission deadline. Incomplete submissions will not be reviewed or accepted.

Selections will be made by a panel of digital art experts according to the following criteria: overall impact of the work, relevance to the theme, quality of accompanying artist statement, creative use of media, and depth of critical exploration.

Artists will receive acceptance and rejection notices via email. Detailed information and instructions will then be sent to artists along with the acceptance letter. You must promptly complete and return:

Work presented in this exhibition will be published in a special SIGGRAPH issue of Leonardo - Journal of Art, Science & Technology. This issue will be available at the conference, so the editorial board will be working to a tight post-acceptance deadline. Please plan to be available for communications during the first two weeks of April.

All work selected for TouchPoint will also be documented in the SIGGRAPH 2010 web site and the Full Conference DVD-ROM.

Presenting Your Work

Shipping

In general, accepted artists are responsible for bringing or shipping their work to SIGGRAPH 2010 at the Los Angeles Convention Center by late July 2010. Artists are also responsible for return shipping after the conference. Information regarding framing and crating of work can be found here.

Installation

We will work closely with you to insure proper and effective installation of your work. You must send exhibition-ready work. Prints must be framed and ready to hang, three-dimensional works must be assembled and ready for display, installation works must be complete with detailed set-up instructions and diagrams, etc. Exhibition installation will be accomplished by professionals, although complex works will need your individual participation, so you should plan to arrive early to assist with installation.

Note: If your work arrives at the convention center, and it is not as depicted in your submission or is not ready for installation, we reserve the right to exclude it from the exhibition.

Other Details

You will be able to update your basic submission information so that it can be included in the conference program and web site. This information needs to be finalized two weeks after acceptance.

If you wish to attend SIGGRAPH 2010, registration and travel costs are at your own expense, except for the contributor of record, who will receive recognition as specified in the SIGGRAPH 2010 Recognition Policy.
