SIGGRAPH 2010 Conference Chair Previews this Year's Show

 

This year, SIGGRAPH returns to Los Angeles, which is arguably the best place in the world to experience the explosive evolution of computer graphics and interactive techniques. You are invited to see, meet, and interact with the "People Behind the Pixels" who are creating the next wave of international excellence in research, animation, art, software, visualization, hardware, games, visual effects, and education.

Dynamic changes in 2010 include the new SIGGRAPH Dailies! program celebrating excellence in computer graphics by showcasing behind the scenes work and the artists' stories that enhance their extraordinary power and beauty. Contributors submitted short (5-15 second) animations of recent work (from the past 18 months) whether professional, personal, academic, or student work. And submissions are still being accepted until 6 May 2010.

Each year the technical content presented at SIGGRAPH gets more and more impressive. So it's always the goal to improve upon the content offered in previous years - a challenging but rewarding task. This year, expanding submission categories and extending deadlines opens the pool of contributions to much wider spectrums of the whole industry ensuring the presence of more great content than ever before. In fact, the late breaking deadline for Posters and Talks is 6 May 2010, so there's still time to submit your work.

One focus in 2010 is to reach out and stress the personalities, the stories, the history behind the most unique and excellent content in CG and interactive techniques ... stressing community and personal interaction during the conference; using social media more than ever to engage our international community before, during, and after the conference. Don't forget, the conference schedule is back to the Sunday - Thursday format from 25-29 July 2010!

Late Breaking Deadlines: Still Time to Submit

 

If you are still interested in presenting your work at SIGGRAPH 2010, there is still time to submit! Submit to any of the following categories by Thursday, 6 May 2010.

All deadlines are at 22:00 UTC/GMT. To determine what time that is where you are, you can use a converter such as The World Clock.


Submission Deadline for Live Real-Time Gaming Content Extended to 28 April 2010

 

SIGGRAPH 2010 is seeking cutting-edge examples of video games and real-time simulations and graphics in several categories: commercial video games, experimental or prototypes games, software applications, interactive data visualizations, and information aesthetics, among others. All content that is interactively controlled and rendered in real-time, and can be repeated in front of a live audience, will be considered.

Animation Clinic Added to Computer Animation Festival

 

The Animation Clinic is a new event in which industry leaders and masters review students’ final projects and offer creative, production, technical, and career advice. Between six and nine projects will be selected, and each chosen work will receive 40 minutes of review during three public sessions that are open to conference attendees. Entrants are required to submit a synopsis, a storyline, storyboards, animation tests, examples of visual development, and character design. Submission deadline is 10 May 2010. More details.


Technical Papers Sneak Peek

 

This year's Technical Papers program is wonderfully diverse and inspiring. SIGGRAPH has accepted papers on an extraordinary range of topics, including:

  • automatic illustration ("Illustrating How Mechanical Assemblies Work")
  • high-quality hardware assisted raytracing ("OptiX: A General Purpose Ray Tracing Engine")
  • physical simulation (e.g., "Unified Simulation of Elastic Rods, Shells, and Solids")
  • geometric modeling for freeform building architecture (e.g, "Geodesic Patterns")
  • automatic control of humanoid characters (e.g., "Generalized Biped Walking Control")
  • hardware/software systems such as a special purpose display ("A Multi-layered Water-drop Display")
  • an open-source platform for computational photography ("The Frankencamera: An experimental platform for computational photography")

“I am confident that the papers in the program will help to keep SIGGRAPH an exciting breeding ground of ideas and advances for many years to come,” said Tony DeRose, SIGGRAPH 2010 Technical Papers Chair from Pixar Animation Studios.


First Selection of SIGGRAPH 2010 Panels Posted

 

Panels are moderated discussions on important topics, with expert panelists chosen by a SIGGRAPH jury to provide a wide range of perspectives. Panels have long been an important part of the annual SIGGRAPH conference because they provide a forum for the community to share experiences, opinions, insights, speculation, disagreement, controversy, and audience interaction with the leading experts in computer graphics and interactive techniques.

One exciting session already planned for SIGGRAPH 2010 is a Panel with Ed Catmull and Richard Chuang providing a historical perspective on computer graphics over the past 30 years entitled "CS 292: The Lost Lectures Computer Graphics People and Pixels in the Past 30 Years."

SIGGRAPH 2010 Courses: Learn from the Experts

 

In SIGGRAPH 2010 Courses, attendees learn from the experts in the field and gain inside knowledge that is critical to career advancement. The spectrum of Courses ranges from an introduction to the foundations of computer graphics and interactive techniques for those new to the field to advanced instruction on the most current techniques and topics. Courses include core curricula taught by invited instructors as well as Courses selected from juried proposals.

Disney Research Unveils Technology Competition to Focus on Youth Education at SIGGRAPH 2010

 

The Learning Challenge at SIGGRAPH 2010 is an open competition sponsored by Disney Research with the goal of finding new and creative ways to use technology to make learning fun for children. Based on the principle that fun and learning should not be contradictory, teams are asked to develop an engaging, computer-based learning application that will delight, inspire, and reveal key learning concepts for children ages 7-11.

The competition is open to individuals or teams (from collegiate students working with faculty advisors to working professionals) who must submit work by 7 June 2010. Twenty finalists will receive travel grants of $1,500 per team and free SIGGRAPH 2010 registration. The winners will be announced 28 July at SIGGRAPH 2010 in Los Angeles and will be eligible to receive a $10,000 cash prize, Disney R&D Tours, Disney Animation Tours, and Walt Disney Studio Tours.

Keynote Speaker Update

 

SIGGRAPH 2010 is proud to announce the selection of one of this year's keynote presenters:

Don Marinelli is the executive producer of Carnegie Mellon's Entertainment Technology Center, a joint initiative between the College of Fine Arts (where he is professor of Drama and Arts Management) and the School of Computer Science. The initiative brings artists and technologists together to produce installations that entertain, inform, inspire, or otherwise affect an audience, guest, player, or participant.

SIGGRAPH 2010 has negotiated great discounts available to conference attendees only. Based on your feedback for more centrally located hotels, SIGGRAPH 2010 is pleased to announce that the headquarters hotel, JW Marriott Hotel Los Angeles at L.A. Live, is just two blocks from the Los Angeles Convention Center and across the street from L.A. LIVE, downtown's new sports, dining, and entertainment hub. There are also many additional other official conference hotels close to the JW Marriott.
