Impact on Society
How do computer graphics and interactive techniques affect society (and vice versa)? Can a virtual relationship be as meaningful as one in the physical world, and is either more real then the other? Are advancements in medical imaging presenting us with previously unimaginable moral choices about quality versus length of life? How does the pervasiveness of technology change our relationship to it? Are we using our abilities to engineer the car (or workplace, home, school, gym) to benefit society or to just make a quick buck?
This theme will provide a forum for the SIGGRAPH community to discuss the positive and negative aspects of the symbiosis between technology and society.
Topics might include:
- Virtual communities
- Ubiquitous computing
- Computer graphics and public policy
- New media focused on issues related to pervasive technology
This theme is open to everyone, including those in medical imaging, all aspects of design, education and research, distributed communities, visualization, and simulation. All types of content are welcome, but proposals for thought-provoking discussions, presentations, and installations are particularly appropriate.
We are especially seeking submissions from those who see themselves as having a stake in this discussion. These issues are too important to let the "leaders" decide alone! This is your opportunity to have your thoughts heard.
