Labs Chair

Overview

The Labs Chair leads a staff of volunteers to plan and implement a creative and robust workshop environment where conference attendees can experiment with various input and output technologies and explore preselected Conference work. The chair oversees Labs content, schedules activities, and coordinates acquisition of equipment and resources for this hands-on workshop.  The Labs Chair works closely with the Conference Chair, Conference Administration, volunteers, donors and contractors to create a creative and robust environment for attendees to receive hands-on experience with various output technologies.

Specific Responsibilities

The following list is a “high-level” view of the specific responsibilities associated with serving as the Labs Chair. The list is organized under general categories of responsibility.

Strategic

  • Participate in strategic planning for SIGGRAPH
  • Create a strategic direction for Labs including overall structure and coordination with the other programs

Management

  • Recruit and manage a subcommittee to assist in supporting and implementing Labs
  • Work closely with the program chairs to coordinate collaboration between program contributions and Labs
  • Work with subcommittee and space designer to design a suitable area for Labs
  • Work with donors and contractors to ensure on-site equipment and facilities are appropriate
  • Procure through purchase or donation the necessary equipment and connectivity to support Labs
  • Provide sufficient information to donors and contributors to successfully present work in Labs
  • Work with donors, contractors and volunteers to set up Labs
  • Manage the on-site operation of Labs
  • Work with donors, contributors and volunteers to tear down the Labs at the end of the conference

Financial

  • Work with the Conference Chair and Conference Administration to prepare preliminary and final conference budgets for Labs
  • Manage Labs budget to stay within the total budgeted amount for the program

Publications

  • Develop the Labs section of the Call for Participation
  • Review copies of promotional materials and publications to ensure accurate Labs information
  • Assist the Publications Chair in the collection and format of any published material from the Labs

Communication

  • Maintain awareness and compliance with all conference policies and procedures
  • Create and maintain a complete Program Plan
  • Report regularly to the Conference Chair and Conference Administration on status of Labs
  • Facilitate and participate in timely communication with donors, subcommittee, other committee chairs, and contributors to provide direction and solve problems
  • Produce a final report by the wrapup meeting in September describing Labs effort, changes from previous years, and lessons learned

Meetings

  • Attend and participate in all conference committees meetings
  • Organize and implement effective Labs subcommittee meetings as necessary
  • Attend Unified Jury and Scheduling meetings to select wide variety of hands on and interactive technology
