Official Rules for the FJORG! Competition
These FJORG! Competition Rules must be completed, signed by each team member and faxed to +1.609.482.8382 by 5 pm Pacific Daylight Time, Monday, 21 May.
Void where prohibited by law.
By entering the FJORG! Competition (the "Competition"), you agree to abide by these Official Rules, and that the decisions of the judges, in conjunction with the Association for Computing Machinery ("ACM") and ACM SIGGRAPH ("SIGGRAPH"), are final with respect to all aspects of the Competition.
Competition OverviewAnimation is not just character movement. It is storytelling, design, mood, character, teamwork, and a number of other elements that combine to create magic.
To celebrate this process, we are creating FJORG! The mission of FJORG! is to create a pressure cooker of opportunity for animators seeking a high-profile event in which to showcase their skills.
Sixteen competing teams of computer graphics ("CG") artists will be chosen to participate in the FJORG! Event to be held during SIGGRAPH 2007 at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California starting at 9 am on Monday, 6 August and ending at 5 pm on Tuesday, 7 August, during which period the 16 teams will compete against each other and resist multiple distractions for 32 hours straight to create the best animation sequence (the "Event"). Recruiters and talent from top computer graphics, feature film, animation, and game companies will be in attendance at SIGGRAPH 2007.
Animators will have access to 3D pre-built rigs for 3D animation, and also 2D animation software wherein they may generate their own characters. This contest encourages creative use of technology to tell a story, based on a theme to be revealed at the Event.
Who Can EnterThe Competition is open to individuals ages 18 and older at the time of entry. Employees, agents, and representatives of ACM, SIGGRAPH, Competition sponsors, or FJORG! Judges (as described below) and their respective affiliates and subsidiaries, and members of their immediate families or households are not eligible to participate. Three eligible persons must form a team (a "Team") in order to enter the Competition. Each eligible person may be a member of only one Team. Substitution of Team members is prohibited without the express consent of the FJORG! Judges.
As discussed in more detail below, no Team will be registered in the Competition or have its demo reel reviewed unless and until all Team members have submitted a signed copy of these Official Rules and a signed Waiver and Release.
How to EnterEach Team must select one member of the Team to act as the Team organizer (the "Team Organizer"). The Team Organizer must submit a complete application package for the Team (discussed in more detail below) and a Team demo reel. The demo reel can be 2D and/or 3D animation, but must be no longer than two (2) minutes in length and no greater than 200 MB in size in QuickTime (.mov), Windows (.avi), or MPEG (.mpg or .mp4) format. The demo reel can be uploaded at the site linked at the bottom of this web page. Only one entry per Team is permitted.
Demo reel submissions will be accepted beginning on Sunday, 15 April until Monday, 21 May at 5 pm, Pacific Daylight Time.
Documents Required for EntryAs indicated above, each Team Organizer must submit a complete application package for the Team no later than Monday, 21 May. The application package must include the following six forms:
- Three (3) signed copies of these Official Rules (one for each Team member); and
- Three (3) signed copies of the Waiver and Release (one for each Team member).
Demo Reel Submission FeeThe demo reel submission fee is $US 30, due at the time of submission. Payment must be made by credit card through the FJORG! submission system using the procedures required by the web site. There is no fee to participate in the Event.
Demo Reel JudgingThe FJORG! judges (to be identified in April) (the "FJORG! Judges") will select 16 Teams (the "Competing Teams") based on their applications and demo reel submissions to participate in the 32-hour Event to be held at the San Diego Convention Center before an attendee crowd. Team demo reels must reflect a command of animation skills in 2D and/or 3D animation by all applicants. Teams may earn up to 100 points from demo reel FJORG! Judges based on the following categories. Demo reels will be judged on the following criteria:
1. 0-20 points awarded to storytelling / believability / acting / personality
2. 0-20 points awarded to pantomime / body language / posing / body mechanics
3. 0-20 points awarded to facial animation / lip sync
4. 0-20 points awarded to artistic style
5. 0-20 points awarded to technical achievement
We do not require fully surfaced, lit, and rendered characters. We are happy to receive wireframes, pencil tests, and movement studies showing good acting and movement. The demo reel may contain short films, sequences, or just movement studies. It is up to the each Team how they chose to present themselves on the demo reel.
Each Team must identify the work on the demo reel with the name of the animators responsible and the names of any other artists who participated on the shot. Shots must be the work of animators seeking participation in the Event.
In selecting the Competing Teams, judges will look for evidence of Team character animation abilities such as character walk cycle, lip sync, acting, and a range of characters. All Team members will be notified that they have been selected to participate in the Event by email, and the Team Organizer identified on the entry form will also be notified by telephone on or before 1 July.
The EventOnly the three individuals listed on the original FJORG! application for each Competing Team may animate on the contest project at the Event, unless a substitution is approved by the FJORG! Judges at least 24 hours prior to the commencement of the Event.
The Event will last at least 32 continual hours, beginning at 9 am on Monday, 6 August and ending on Tuesday, 7 August at 5 pm. All Competing Team members must be present at the FJORG! Staging Room at the San Diego Convention center in San Diego, California on the second floor, by 8 am, Monday, 6 August or they will be eliminated from participating in the Event. Participants may begin the production of the themed animation at 9 am on Monday, 6 August and must hand in their final animated sequence to the FJORG! Judges by 5 pm on Tuesday, 7 August. Each Competing Team must create an animated sequence based on a theme that will be revealed at the Event and using only the limited materials that will be provided at the Event by ACM SIGGRAPH. The animated sequence must be no shorter than 15 seconds and employ at least one sound bite. There is no maximum time limit for the animated sequence.
On the day of the Event, the Competing Teams will be supplied with sound and voice-over selections; rigged CG models; monitor, computer hardware sufficient to house software and provide necessary output; software, including Autodesk products Maya and 3D Max, Adobe products Photoshop and After Effects, Macromedia product Flash (all products being used are the results of donations from our industry friends and as such, the actual products used are therefore subject to change without notice), and other tactile materials required to create story boards; meals; and entertainment.
Competing Teams will be required to focus, as there will be multiple staged distractions during the course of the Event. Participants may participate in other SIGGRAPH mini-events (open only to registered FJORG! participants) and take naps, sleep cycles, and other self-prescribed breaks during the Event. However, competitors are encouraged to plan their time wisely. Competing Teams will be tested not only on their talents, but on their ability to withstand distractions staged by the Event coordinators. Competing Team members must remain in the FJORG! Staging Room for the duration of the 32-hour Event, but will be permitted to use the restroom facilities and attend other FJORG! mini-events. Each Competing Team's final animated sequence must be submitted to the FJORG! Judges by 5 pm on 7 August. Entries not received by 5 pm on 7 August will be disqualified and will not be entered into the final judging. Additional rules will be provided at the Event.
No hardware, software, or media storage devices may be brought to the Event by the participants, and no resources, assets, or materials other than those supplied to the participants on the day of the Event may be used to create the animated sequence. The FJORG! contest computers will be configured to prohibit any such interaction. No internet usage is allowed during the Event, and participants may not access computers assigned to other Teams.
