Sketches

Short Illustrated Talks

Sketches offer a premier forum for presenting the best new ideas, methodologies, and cutting-edge applications of computer graphics and interactive techniques. They feature short, illustrated, 20-minute talks that summarize speculative breakthroughs, works in progress, and recent achievements covering a broad spectrum of topics in art, design, science, and engineering. Stick around after Sketches presentations for Q&A and to hear the presenters discuss future implications of their work.

"SIGGRAPH 2007 Sketches encompass ideas ranging from speculation to academic research, from industrial development and practical tools to behind-the-scenes explanations of commercial and artistic work," said Marc Alexa, SIGGRAPH 2007 Sketches and Posters Co-Chair from Technische Universität Berlin. "SIGGRAPH 2007 Sketches bring you one of the only places in the world where you can find creativity and innovation that will define the future of our discipline."

Posters

Graphic Displays

Posters feature graphic displays of incremental, preliminary, partial, and innovative insights that are important but not fully developed. A poster is traditionally formed from a collection of individual letter-size sheets of paper, each containing a slide or image, all attached to a piece of poster board. Posters are displayed throughout the conference week, and presenters discuss their work in scheduled sessions.

"Posters are a unique SIGGRAPH venue, because they not only are presented during a scheduled time slot, but they are on display throughout the week, allowing you to browse and study posters at your convenience, devoting time to those projects that interest you most," said Sketches & Posters Co-Chair Adam Finkelstein from Princeton University. "I encourage you to stop by and check out the newest developing research in computer graphics and interactive techniques."

ACM SIGGRAPH Awards

Honoring Excellence

During SIGGRAPH 2007, ACM SIGGRAPH will honor the following three industry innovators:

Steven A. Coons Award

Nelson Max
Professor of Computer Science, University of California, Davis and
Computer Scientist, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

The Steven A. Coons Award is given in odd-numbered years to an individual to honor that person's lifetime contribution to computer graphics and interactive techniques. This award is presented to Nelson Max in recognition of his work in pioneering scientific visualization, his deep technical contributions, and his generous participation in the encouragement and stimulation of ideas and intellectual exchange in computer graphics.

Computer Graphics Achievement Award

Greg Ward
Independent Consultant

The Computer Graphics Achievement Award is given each year to recognize an individual for an outstanding achievement in computer graphics and interactive techniques. ACM SIGGRAPH is pleased to present Greg Ward with this award for advancing the state of the art of computer graphics and for making high-quality rendering accessible to a large community of users. His development of the Radiance Synthetic Imaging System promoted the use of computer graphics in applications requiring physical accuracy, and raised the bar for the quality and efficiency of graphics rendering algorithms.

Significant New Researcher Award

Ravi Ramamoorthi
Associate Professor of Computer Science, Columbia University

The Significant New Researcher Award is awarded annually to a researcher who has made a recent significant contribution to the field of computer graphics and is new to the field. The intent is to recognize people very early in their career who have already made a notable contribution and are likely to make more. ACM SIGGRAPH is proud to recognize Ravi Ramamoorthi for his groundbreaking work on mathematical representations and computational models for the visual appearance of objects.

On-Site Tips and Tricks

Lessons Learned From Past Attendees

  • Plan your conference itinerary in advance
Visit the SIGGRAPH 2007 website ahead of time and review the Schedule so you use your time in San Diego wisely.
  • Pack a snack
The Convention Center food can be expensive and you don't always want to take time out of the day to leave and grab a bite. If you bring a few snacks, you should be able to make it through the day and soak up the most content possible.
  • Wear comfy shoes
The San Diego Convention Center is a large venue, plan to walk a lot during the day.
  • Register on Saturday
Registration is open from 1 - 7 pm on Saturday, 4 August. If you register on Saturday, you will get your technical materials and merchandise early and can take them to your hotel room so you don't have to carry a heavy bag around with you for an entire day.
  • Bring a sweater
Convention Centers tend to be chilly. Bring a sweater so you are comfortable throughout the day.

Each issue of SIGGRAPHITTI features one SIGGRAPH-related trivia question that tests the extent of your SIGGRAPH knowledge. Get them right and earn the title SIGGRAPH Expert.

Congratulations to last month's winner, Pete Segal, Development Manager of Visualization at Bentley Systems, Inc., who was one of 8 correct entries (winner is randomly chosen from all correct entries).

June SIGGRAPHITTI trivia question:
The SIGGRAPH 2007 Art Gallery: Global Eyes will hold performances at a different location than the San Diego Convention Center. To earn a chance at the coveted title of SIGGRAPH expert, answer the three following questions:

3. How do you get to the location of the performances?

Answer:
1. The performances will start on Saturday, 4 August and will continue through Monday evening.
2. The performances will take place at the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) and the Center for Research in Computing and the Arts (CRCA) at Atkinson Hall at the University of California, San Diego.
3. SIGGRAPH 2007 shuttle bus service is available for round-trip transportation from the convention center to the performance venues.

All correct entries received by 20 July 2007 will be entered into a pool and a winner will be selected at random. The next SIGGRAPHITTI will feature the correct answer and that month's winner. Winners receive their choice of either the Conference Proceedings DVD or a SIGGRAPH 2007 Polo shirt (approx $50 value). Only contestants who attend SIGGRAPH 2007 are eligible.
