SIGGRAPH Announces Winners from Computer Animation Festival "People's Choice Awards"

(Chicago) - Winners were recently announced from the SIGGRAPH 2005 Computer Animation Festival's People's Choice Awards. For the first time in SIGGRAPH history, attendees were able to vote for their favorite selection from the Electronic and Animation Theaters within the Computer Animation Festival.

The SIGGRAPH Computer Animation Festival is an internationally recognized event that engages and inspires artists and technologists alike. Each year, it serves as a mirror of what is possible today and a window into what can be achieved in the future.

And the People's Choice Awards go to:

Cubic Tragedy (Electronic Theater)

Ming-Yuan Chuan
National Taiwan University of Science and Technology
Taiwan
A polygonian girl tried to make herself prettier by using her new cosmetic tools (for polygon modeling of course), and by doing so accidentally ruined her own face. This tragedy may have inspired one of the world's most famous paintings.

Surly Squirrel (Animation Theater)

Peter Lepeniotis
Pantaloons Productions/DKP Studios
Canada
A starving park squirrel and a city rat come across a discarded pizza slice. The duo's greed disrupts the natural order of the park. Simultaneously, across the street from the park, a bank heist is taking place in the human world. The two worlds collide in an uproarious escape for both rodents and bank robbers alike. The story culminates in a desperate car chase with police and park animals in hot pursuit. The pigeons save the day, restoring order to both worlds, for now ... until the sequel!

The official SIGGRAPH 2005 Computer Animation Festival jury had selected three award winners from this year's 560 entries for exemplary use of computer-generated imagery and animation, and compelling storytelling. The jury winners were:
