The Walk-Through Fog Screen Experience

The walk-through fog screen is a novel and intriguing method for forming a superior-quality, physically penetrable fog projection screen. It is a break-through technology, literally! The image floats in thin air and when you touch or walk through it, you can't feel anything. It is a little like magic.

Innovation
The basic idea was to create a large non-turbulent airflow and inject a thin non-turbulent fog (or smoke, etc.) flow into the airflow. The airflow protects the fog sheet from turbulence, so it remains thin and crisp, enabling high-quality projections and the walk-through possibility. Images can be either rear- or front-projected. The screen can be translucent or fully opaque. This innovation has international patents pending, and it is highly likely that there are no earlier similar works.

Vision
The fog screen enables many novel applications indoors. We can also extend the technology to limited outdoor usage. Interesting applications include walk-through, play-with advertisements in shops or malls; walk-through screens in museums, science centers, or theatres; special effects; or theme-park entrances. The fog screen can also be used in CAVE-like virtual rooms to create fog walls. The fog screen is non-breakable, which enables safe gaming, exercise or training, and unsupervised public presentations. It also enables the audience to enter and exit rapidly through the walls into virtual environments, which may be even sequential.

The basic fog screen technology can be extended in many ways and merged with other technologies. For example, computer-vision-based finger tracking implies many new possibilities. like drawing onto a fog sketchpad or using a "fog web browser."

Goal
The fog screen prototypes will be further developed and applied to many useful and cool applications.
