Thermo-Key: Human Region Segmentation From Video Using Thermal Information

Image segmentation is an important topic in several technologies. This project demonstrates Thermo-Key, a novel technique for segmenting human region from video images. While conventional approaches use color, depth, or background subtraction, Thermo-Key uses thermal information to detect the human region.

Innovation
Utilization of thermal information is innovative, since it is very different from conventional approaches for image segmentation. Thermo-Key also features a unique optical system for capturing data. The system works very well in any lighting and background condition.

Vision
This system can be applied in virtual reality and broadcasting, as well as presentation and communication. One possible future application is in designing interfaces that optimize this new segmentation method.

Goal
The goal of this project is to realize a robust and compact system for interactive applications based on human region segmentation. The prototype system is robust, but it is not compact. The next step is to design a compact optical system and apply it to the ubiquitous network environment.
