SIGGRAPH Student Services Mini-CFP - Jim Kilmer
ACM SIGGRAPH is proud to announce the creation of SIGGRAPH Student Services (S3), a new group dedicated to providing year-round academic, professional and mentoring opportunities for students in Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques. The new group is beginning limited operations immediately, and will be in full operation following the 2007 SIGGRAPH Conference in San Diego.
S3 is searching for talented and dedicated individuals with a desire to help build educational opportunities and provide mentoring and guidance services for students in our fields. We welcome any and all volunteers, and have ample opportunities available to use your knowledge and expertise to benefit the next generation of SIGGRAPH professionals.
Interested persons should contact Jim Kilmer, ACM SIGGRAPH Director at Large, at jim_kilmer@siggraph.org with any questions, ideas, suggestions, or to offer your time with any of the opportunities below.
We are currently searching for persons willing to fill the following volunteer positions:
Academic Liaisons:
- This position will help open lines of communication with academic departments, and Career Planning & Placement departments, at schools and universities worldwide, to gather information about programs, opportunities and events that can benefit the community, as well as provide them with information and recruiting services for ACM SIGGRAPH programs that their students can participate in. General knowledge and some previous interaction with academic departments, as well as willingness to contact a variety of people to open relationships, is essential. Time requirement is generally free-form, and is ongoing.
Limited on-site annual Conference responsibilities (with expenses
covered) are expected to begin at SIGGRAPH 2008.
Industry Liaisons:
- This position will help open lines of communications with recruiting, marketing and other outreach departments at companies in SIGGRAPH-related industries, to gather information about opportunities and programs they may offer, as well as provide information, resources and invitations to participate in S3 programs. Good interpersonal skills, and a good working relationship or knowledge of companies and contacts in a SIGGRAPH-related field, would be beneficial to this position. Time requirement is generally free-form, and is ongoing.
Limited on-site annual Conference responsibilities (with expenses
covered) are expected to begin at SIGGRAPH 2008.
PHP / Website Programmer:
- This position will assist in the maintenance, bug-fixing, and feature development of a PHP / MySQL / Apache data portal site, as well as the development of ad-hoc tools to meet the operational needs of various student-related SIGGRAPH programs. Specific goals will be provided, but ample opportunity to help drive the direction of future systems will be available. Certain specific deadlines will have to be met, but our timelines for delivery are generally very reasonable and flexible. May involve future on-site Conference responsibilities if so desired, and as available.
Student Mentors:
- S3 seeks Industry Professionals and Academic Advisors to act as mentors for students in SIGGRAPH-related programs. Must be willing to work directly with one or more students to answer questions, provide guidance, and direct them towards academic or professional programs and opportunities that will help them meet their goals. Most interaction will be by e-mail, but other methods are welcome, at your discretion.
You may mentor as many or as few students as you feel comfortable with.
Initial contact and matching will be done for you by the S3 committee.
We will ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire to identify your personal strengths and in what fields you feel you would best benefit students.
Demo Reel, Portfolio and Resume Reviewers:
- As students transition from academia to their professional careers, the way in which they present themselves to prospective employers can determine the course of their lives for years to come. ACM SIGGRAPH will be expanding an existing program to review these materials for students and provide feedback on what they might change or improve to better present themselves in their field. If you have any prior experience in recruiting, reel/portfolio/resume creation or mentoring, or have been in your field long enough to possess a firm grasp on what companies are searching for in entry-level candidates, we invite you to use your expertise to help students in SIGGRAPH-related programs. S3 will organize and distribute materials to you electronically for students in your area(s) of expertise, and you may help as many or as few students as you feel comfortable with.
Service Liaisons:
- Beginning at SIGGRAPH 2008, S3 will provide on-site staffing and services for several SIGGRAPH Conference programs, relating to student and attendee information and career assistance. Interested persons must be willing to participate in limited year-round planning and program development, and must be currently planning to attend SIGGRAPH 2007 in San Diego as either a volunteer with another program, or as an attendee, with a goal of familiarizing yourself with the programs S3 will offer beginning in 2008. On-site annual Conference responsibilities (with expenses covered) will begin at SIGGRAPH 2008. Time requirements are expected to be minimal aside from the Conference week, but an initial commitment of participation from July 2007 through at least December
2008 is requested, to ensure proper training and knowledge transfer.
If you would like to volunteer your time for these, or any other related positions, please contact Jim Kilmer at jim_kilmer@siggraph.org. Become a part of the S3 team, interact with some of the best people in our fields, and have a lot of fun while giving back to the community!
Thank you for your time!
Best regards,
Jim Kilmer
