The Education Committee Explores Second Life

The Education Committee is exploring Second Life (SL) as a possible online virtual experience to supplement its Space-Time Student Exhibition.

The Education Committee is exploring Second Life (SL) as a possible online virtual experience to supplement its Space-Time Student Exhibition.  Since ACM SIGGRAPH has begun looking at SL as a possible virtual meeting space, the Space-Time Exhibition was asked to participate as a pilot program.  The committee is currently exploring implementation processes.  Director for Education of ACM SIGGRAPH, Rick Barry said,   “While SL's virtual structure might be somewhat forbidding to non-gamer-types, it does offer far more than most alternatives in its ability to create virtual environments with a sense of place and with pseudo-social interactions.”

If this goes forward, we will be partnering with the New Media Consortium (NMC) on implementation and training issues revolving around use of SL. The NMC is the largest single presence of any organization in SL.  They host more events on a regular basis within SL than any other organization as well.
