Ed Catmull is awarded the Gorden E. Sawyer Award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Congratulations to our long-time ACM SIGGRAPH member and prominent volunteer Ed Catmull, who was honored with an Oscar statuette at the Scientific and Technical Awards Presentations.
The Gordon E. Sawyer award is given to “an individual in the motion picture industry whose technological contributions have brought credit to the industry.”
Ed Catmull, co-founder of Pixar Animation Studios, president of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, and recipient of the ACM SIGGRAPH Steven A. Coons award, has demonstrated a lifetime of leadership in the field of computer graphics, and has inspired a generation of computer scientists, artists and movie-goers.
Ed Catmull has been a long-time SIGGRAPH volunteer, having served numerous times on the Papers Committee as well as stewarding the ACM SIGGRAPH Technical Awards as Awards Chair. Most recently, Ed Catmull delighted a packed session of SIGGRAPH attendees as the featured speaker in 2008. Ed was inducted as an ACM Fellow in 1995, and has described ACM SIGGRAPH as his 'home community'. For his brilliance, his dedication to excellence and his generous volunteerism, the SIGGRAPH community is proud to call Ed our own and extend him a heartfelt congratulations.
