The ACM SIGGRAPH Executive Committee (EC) is forming the ACM SIGGRAPH Advisory Board (ASAB). The purpose of the ASAB is to advise the EC on issues and to act as a resource to help us increase our communication with our members and community. We want a representative group that reflects our membership both in technical and creative aspects and geographical distribution. The ASAB will have no meetings and will be an electronic discussion group, primarily email. It will be a small group of about 15 people. If you are interested in being considered a candidate for the ASAB or want to recommend another candidate please contact me at owen (at) siggraph.org. Scott Owen

Congratulations to long-time ACM SIGGRAPH member and prominent volunteer Ed Catmull. Presented by the International Animated Film Society in honor of the man who defined a generation of moviegoers and animation fans, the Ub Iwerks Award was created and given to individuals or companies for technical advancements that make a significant impact on the art or industry of animation.

The ACM SIGGRAPH 2005 election results are in. G. Scott Owen was elected President, and Alyn Rockwood was elected Vice President. New offices begin on July 1, 2005. We appreciate the commitment to ACM SIGGRAPH that all the candidates made in accepting the nominations and regret that the candidates who were not elected will not serve on the Executive Committee at this time. We are sure that such outstanding volunteers will have many other opportunities to serve within ACM SIGGRAPH, and we look forward to continuing to work with all the candidates in some way.

The deadline for papers submission is July 15 for VAST2005 which is the 6th International Symposium on Virtual Reality, Archaeology and Cultural Heritage and incorporates the Third Eurographics Symposium on Graphics and Cultural Heritage (EGSGH 2005). VAST 2005 is in-cooperation with ACM SIGGRAPH.

ACM SIGGRAPH, the world's premiere professional association for computer graphics and interactive techniques, is a volunteer run organization. The ACM SIGGRAPH Executive Committee (EC) sets the policy issues for the organization, and acts as its overall governing body. There are three different volunteer positions currently up for the 2006 election by our membership to the ACM SIGGRAPH Executive Committee. The ACM SIGGRAPH Nominating Committee is seeking exceptional individuals interested in participating in these leadership opportunities: Treasurer, Director for Education, and Director at Large.

The SIGGRAPH 2005 Conference Presentations DVD-ROM set is now available for purchase. Over 250 hours of content was recorded at this year's conference and is being made available on a 7 disc DVD-ROM set. This set will include over 400 speaker presentations fully synchronized with accompanying presentation materials including slides, videos and live demos.

CG Pioneer Bill Kovacs Passes Away by Viveka Weiley — last modified 08 June 2006 08:08 PM
Bill Kovacs, who co-founded Wavefront Technologies, earned a 1997 Academy Award for science and engineering innovations and who worked as a programmer on TRON, passed away last Tuesday at his home in Camarillo, California. Kovacs, who was 56, died of a stroke in his sleep brought on by a cerebral hemorrhage.

ACM SIGGRAPH is sponsoring the first ever two-day video game symposium on 29 July and 30 July in 2006, co-located with SIGGRAPH 06 in Boston, MA, USA. The symposium will consist of keynotes, panels and papers. In addition, a "Hot Games" session will preview unreleased titles from major game companies and indie developers. The Sandbox program has just been announced with keynotes by Greg Costikyan of Manifesto Games and Ian Shaw from E.A. UK.

The ACM SIGGRAPH 2006 Full Conference DVD-ROM publication has been mailed to all SIGGRAPH 2006 'Full Conference' registrants. Packages for delivery in the US were sent out on August 11th and 14th, and packages for delivery outside the US were sent out on August 16th.

The ACM SIGGRAPH Education Committee site has been updated and moved to education.siggraph.org. The new site employs the Plone content management system now in use by ACM SIGGRAPH, which will offer a host of useful features. One such feature, already in place, is the ability for users to post comments about published items. This Fall, the Education Committee will be developing an online Education Database to replace the former Academic Index, which is no longer operational.

We are looking for work that describes or illustrates innovative research in videogame theory, practice and criticism. Video games are a singular technological medium, comparable in cultural impact to the telephone, television or the Internet. What are the creative, technological and commercial challenges facing this medium in the future? How do we relate great stories that leverage advances in technology? What is the continuing impact of this medium on individuals and society?
