Publications Proposal
Stephen Spencer presented a proposal for documenting the annual
conference program by consolidating print and media publications
into two printed books and two electronic publications. The form of
these publications undergoes change periodically, and this change
will save ACM SIGGRAPH about $150,000 this year. It was felt that we
need to be sure that our membership and subscribers understand the
reasons behind these changes, and Alain Chesnais (President) and
Stephen Spencer (Director for Publications) will draft a letter to
send to the members and subscribers. Sale prices for members and
non-members have not been set, but they will follow the approved
guidelines. It was also pointed out that it will be feasible to add
a search engine to the electronic publications.
The separate published pieces to document the annual conference
will be:
1 - Conference Proceedings book
2 - Electronic Art and Animation book
3 - Full Conference DVD-ROM
4 - Conference Select CD-ROM
#1 and #2 are unchanged from their appearance and coverage in
years past.
#3 and #4 are new publications, which replace the following:
Course Notes CD-ROM
Conference Abstracts and Applications book
Conference Abstracts and Applications CD-ROM
Electronic Art and Animation Catalog CD-ROM
Title #3 - the Full Conference DVD-ROM - will be a single 4.7GB
DVD-ROM containing electronic versions of content from all
documented conference programs.
Title #4 - the Conference Select CD-ROM - would be a single 700MB
CD-ROM containing electronic versions of content from all documented
conference programs EXCEPT Courses and Papers.
Motion (Spencer, Brown) To accept the publications proposal.
Approved (10,0,0)
Co-located Conferences
There has been some confusion regarding the process for having
aditional small conferences co-located with the SIGGRAPH annual
conference. Since all small conference activity is the
responsibility of the ACM SIGGRAPH Vice President, Barb Helfer
clarified the policy and process. The Conference Outreach Chair
reports to the Vice President for any small conference activity and
to the Conference Chair for other outreach activity, such as
bringing new content into the conference programs. The conference
web site will be changed to include the contact information for Barb
Helfer and to state that all co-located events must be coordinated
with and approved by her.
There will be no symposia co-located with the SIGGRAPH conference
that have not gone through the ACM review process and been approved
by the Vice President and ACM to be sponsored, co-sponsored, or in
cooperation with ACM SIGGRAPH.
Online Services
It was felt that there should be someone in charge of online
services throughout ACM SIGGRAPH, perhaps as a member of the
Executive Committee. While this is being discussed, it was agreed
that someone should be put into the position of chairing this
activity. This online services chair will look at the global issue
for online services, as well as the look and feel of the web site
and other aspects of the online presence. There should also be an
advisory group made up of members of the various ACM SIGGRAPH
committees.
Graphic Identity
The annual conference is looking at having the same graphic
design each year, and it was felt that the organization could
benefit from having a unified graphic identity. Alain Chesnais is
appointing a task force, with Gudrun Enger as chair to work through
this, keeping in mind that SIGGRAPH 2004 must have its identity by
the first of May. This will be discussed with the conference
promotions group, and Thierry Frey also volunteered for the task
force.
SIGGRAPH 2005 Location
Scott Owen brought forward a motion to hold SIGGRAPH 2005 in Los
Angeles. The hotels are offering the same rates as they are for
2004, which is the same as it was in 2001.
Motion (Owen, Frey) to locate SIGGRAPH 2005 in Los Angeles.
Approved (10,0,0)
SIGGRAPH 2004 Technical Chairs
Dena Slothower, SIGGRAPH 2004 Chair presented information on the
technical chair candidates for SIGGRAPH 2004 and answered questions.
This discussion will continue on the next conference call, November
13.
Minutes Amendment
Scott Owen proposed the following amendment to the minutes of the
May, 2002, ACM SIGGRAPH Executive Committee meeting:
"For the last three years (SIGGRAPH 2000-SIGGRAPH 2002), the
conference has adopted the practice of budgeting the contingency out
of the reserve fund. SIGGRAPH 2000 realized a positive return,
SIGGRAPH 2001 had a negative return, and it is anticipated that
SIGGRAPH 2002 will realize a negative return as well."
Motion (Owen, Helfer) To amend the minutes.
Approved (9,0,0)
Note: The conference call had run over schedule and Stephen
Spencer was not on the call for this vote. |
