Steve Cunningham presented Judy Brown, John Hart, Alyce Kaprow, Bonnie Mitchell and Adele Newton with plaques from SIGGRAPH with certificates of appreciation from ACM for their years of service on the SIGGRAPH Executive Committee.
A Complimentary Task Force of Maxine Brown, Wayne Carlson, Bonnie Mitchell, and Dino Schweitzer will look at the whole issue of conference comps -- benefits provided to contributors and volunteers. Their goal is to set recommendations by the end of the year, to go into effect after SIGGRAPH 97.
John Fujii reported that feedback has been extremely positive from exhibitors to attendees; everything ran very smoothly. Over 28,500 people attended, including a record number of technical program registrants, with a record-breaking exhibition space of 157,800 net square feet and 321 exhibitors. Douglas Adams, the keynote speaker was well received. The Contemporary Art Center was well attended and CAC commented that it was the best show they have had in that space -- ever! Housing was a major issue, however, using over 50 hotels and with some attendees having to stay in neighboring towns.
Scott Owen reported that SIGGRAPH 97 has already set a record for exhibit space sales and the Get Involved reception was very successful
The Conference Advisory Group met with Ralph Schuetz, Director, Customer Relations, Satellite Services of PBS to discuss opportunities for a satellite uplink to distribute SIGGRAPH programming of several types, Colleges and universities are expected to be the initial targets for this broadcast.
Walt Bransford reported that it was a good week for SIGGRAPH 98. He is very interested in input from the Executive Committee and looks forward to staying in touch and working closely with us.
The Conference Advisory Group interviewed candidates for SIGGRAPH 99 chair. One will be identified by the December Executive Committee meeting.
Dino Schweitzer, Chief Staff Executive, reported that SIGGRAPH 97 marks the beginning of the new Conference Management model. He has a strong staff in Patty Harrison and Betsy Johnsmiller, who will be working very closely with him.
A report on future sites was given. SIGGRAPH 99 is looking at Los Angeles, Anaheim or Las Vegas, although Las Vegas has problems with available dates. If SIGGRAPH 99 were to be held in San Francisco, both the programs and exhibit space would be limited and the attendees would not have all the venues under one roof. The Conference Advisory Group (CAG) is looking at the West Coast at least every other year. They are looking at New Orleans or Atlanta for the year 2000 and are waiting for feedback from attendees.
Chuck Hansen brought up concerns over student fees and asked that particular attention be paid to student registration. He also pointed out that attendees like moving around to different places and is concerned about going back to California. Dino Schweitzer indicated that the conference's goals is to be in different locations on West Coast years.
John Hart noted that SIGGRAPH membership has dropped significantly, and SIGGRAPH needs to have a membership drive. One component would be a strong organizational effort at the conference. A major part of that has been at the SIGGRAPH Organization booth run by Bonnie Mitchell. Bonnie was thanked for doing an exceptional job in running it. Thanks was also given to Alyce Kaprow for forming the membership task force.
MEMBERSHIP TASK FORCE
Alyce Kaprow reported on the Membership Task Force, whose members were Ed Catmull, Steve Cunningham, Enrique Godreau, John Hart, Leo Hourvitz, Bob Judd and Carolyn Williams. One of the most important results of the task force was the reaffirmation for the organization to align its membership to the overall computer graphics community. The core of SIGGRAPH has always been its excellence, and this has evolved from the technical core. This excellence has ignited and excited many people from other areas. The goal is to attract as members, excellent artists, musicians, animators and entertainment industry people in order to expand on the excellent core of the technical community.
John Hart reported that the Communications Committee will consist of an on-line position (Bob Judd), a special events position (Judy Brown); both membership marketing and membership finance positions, to identify the needs of members (Carolyn Williams and Enrique Godreau, respectively), a conference presence position (Bonnie Mitchell) and an at-large position (Tom Wright). A membership drive is being planned with a working title of "10K by 2K."
RELATIONSHIP WITH ACM
John Hart reported that as Director at Large, one of his primary tasks was to head a task force on the relationship between SIGGRAPH and ACM HQ. When the task force was started, it was intended to be a four-step process; one was to gather information and then analyze it; another was to draw conclusions. This project is making slow and steady progress and a report will be coming shortly. Once the analysis is made, it will be presented to EC and report further recommendations on where to go from there.
MEMBERSHIP AND SIGGRAPH STRUCTURE
Membership in SIGGRAPH has decreased dramatically over the past ten years. There are several factors that have contributed to this, one of which is that it is not possible to join without either joining ACM as well or by paying an extra fee (currently $27.00) to ACM.
It was proposed that SIGGRAPH change to restricted SIG status. A restricted SIG's membership is open only to ACM members or to persons whose primary professional allegiance is not to computing. This allows an individual who is not an ACM member to join SIGGRAPH as an affiliate member without paying an extra fee to ACM, thus reducing the cost to such person.
Such a change requires a bylaw change, including an approval by SIG Board and a review by the ACM Bylaws Committee. If the change were to be approved to take effect by July 1, everything must be in place by March that same year, which is when membership fees are set.
Executive Committee discussion centered on whether SIGGRAPH finds enough value in making membership to noncomputing professionals less expensive to justify recruiting computing professionals desiring SIGGRAPH membership to join ACM. The discussion was tabled pending future study by Membership Committee.
A number of bylaw questions were under consideration. These included addition to the elections bylaws that forbids SIGGRAPH to extend the terms of its officers without an election, updating the mission statement in the bylaws with one derived during the development of the Snowbird meeting, cleaning up the process of appointing persons to replace EC members who leave before their terms are finished, adding our ACM Program Director to the list of ex-officio members of the Executive Committee to parallel the addition of the conference Chief Staff Executive, and removing gender-specific wording in the bylaws.

The SIGGRAPH Executive Committee will send a letter to NSF outlining the contributions the Geometry Center has made to the field of Computer Graphics.
Dino Schweitzer presented discussions with representatives from the Smithsonian Institution. They have some materials from SIGGRAPH tapes at the Information Age display in the National Museum of American History and are beginning to plan to redevelop that display. A meeting will be held in Washington, DC to discuss collaboration between the Smithsonian and the SIGGRAPH organization. Alain Chesnais pointed out that this is in the National Museum of American History and needs to go beyond the USA. Arrangements have been made to send a full set of SIGGRAPH Video Review tapes to the Smithsonian so they may curate the pieces they want, and we will deal with getting high quality masters for them.
Nan Schaller reported on the budget cycle and discussed the process for developing the budget proposals for FY'98.
FUTURE EC MEETING SCHEDULE
December 6-8 - budget meeting; February 22-24, 1997 (before the ACM Spring Business Meetings) - membership meeting; May 2-4 - if needed.
The Special Projects Committee is chaired by Judy Brown with members Mike McGrath, Oscar Garcia and Bob Powell. The committee has funded four projects and continues to look for additional interesting projects.
An agreement between SIGGRAPH and NICOGRAPH has been signed, and the renewed agreement between SIGGRAPH and EUROGRAPHICS was signed. Alain Chesnais is currently negotiating with IMAGINE for an in-cooperation arrangements for their conference.

Mary Whitton indicated that the slate of candidates for the 1997 election is not yet complete but the committee has met with prospective candidates and will have a complete slate of candidates soon.
DIRECTOR FOR EDUCATION
Marc Barr reported that the Education booth was bigger and better this year. S.P.A.C.E. had a record number of entries and accepted 47 pieces; thanks to Jackie White and Catherine Yoder for this work. There was a record number of slide entries from the United States, New Zealand and Hong Kong. 220 slides were sent and will travel in the U.S. and internationally.
The Education Committee supported 11 grants to bring educators to the conference, and 240 people were preregistered for the conference Educators Program, chaired by Rosalee Wolfe.
Scott Lang reported on the new Professional Chapters structure. Colleen Cleary will organize chapters content for Computer Graphics and oversee Chapters press passes. Gary Paxinos is Webmaster. There are 30 Professional Chapters. The Professional Chapters booth was a success due to the efforts of Cleary and Paxinos, both of who were thanked for their participation. The Saturday chapters development workshop was successful, with 40 attendees.
Steve Spencer honored Susan Mair for her work as editor of Computer Graphics with a plaque. He announced that Gordon Cameron is now the newsletter editor. Spencer also thanked Karen Sullivan, Colleen Cleary, Rosalee Wolfe and Stephan Keith for their contributions. Jenny Moreland will replace Rosalee Wolfe as slides editor for 1997. Thanks to Bob Judd, Gary Paxinos, Bob Holzman and John Michael Pierobon for their work on siggraph.org.
Publications put together an outreach project this past spring, funded by Special Projects, to enable educators around the world who cannot afford the technical publications to acquire them. This program is based on formal requests from institutions and will be reviewed after two years.
SIGGRAPH's Member Plus program has seen notable additions this past year. This program offers publications of SIGGRAPH conference worldwide to members at substantially reduced rates. For the first time, this program will include the proceedings of the Visualization Conference and the EUROGRAPHICS Rendering Workshop.
JOURNAL OF GRAPHICS TOOLS
It was noted that ACM has reached a marketing agreement with the Journal
of Graphics Tools without consultation with SIGGRAPH, in spite of
SIGGRAPH's request for discussion on any computer graphics-related
activities. John Hart reminded the EC that there was a previous motion on

The Public Policy committee, chaired by Bob Ellis and Judy Brown had a very active year. One project was a Computer Graphics White Paper describing technical challenges and public policy. Judy and Bob worked on the public policy section and will release it for review. The public policy section will be organized into a set of issues related to graphics.
SIGGRAPH made an official response to the FCC on their request for comments on proposed HDTV standards. Bob wrote cover letters and sent it off to outline issues associated with the proposal from the Computer Graphics standpoint. The committee also worked on putting together a white paper on computer graphics research issues.
POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
Steve Cunningham reported that the process of reviewing a full set of SIGGRAPH policies and procedures are underway. There will be some updates and they will be distributed to the EC.
FALL PLANNING MEETING
Taner Kodanaz has been chosen to facilitate the fall planning meeting, and he visited SIGGRAPH 96 to meet with key SIGGRAPH people. The process of choosing the attendees for the planning meeting was discussed. Steve Cunningham will work with Kodanaz to determine the size of the meeting.
