Viewing Transformations: 2D and 3D

Introduction

When we define an image in some world coordinate system, to display that image we must map the image to the physical output device. This is a two stage process. For 3 dimensional images we must first determine the 3D camera viewpoint, called the View Reference Point (VRP) and orientation. Then we project from 3D to 2D, since our display device is 2 dimensional. Next, we must map the 2D representation to the physical device. We will first discuss the concept of a Window on the world (WDC), and then a Viewport (in NDC), and finally the mapping WDC to NDC to PDC.
