Opening of the Cabot Space Center

For over a year, something really big has been quietly been brewing in the Oakland Hills. Now it's time to unveil the most technologically advanced planetarium in the United States, and I want to invite you to the upcoming launch events.

To start off with a bang, the Chabot is launching with the eye candy royalle, "SonicVision" (produced by the Museum of Natural History in NYC) with Moby on the music mix. (Think old planetarium laser show on steroid-laced super-hyperdrive--with contemporary music.) Featured music includes U2, Moby, Eno/Byrne, Radiohead, Audioslave, etc. Check out the press releases for more details. Here are links to the press release in both doc or pdf formats -

and here's a recent SFGate piece that features a bit about it.

On Saturday, the dome opens to the public. These launch events represents the culmination of Alex Barnett's strategic vision, loads of hard work from a top notch team, and about 2 million dollars worth of the latest high-resolution, multipipe (6), interactive, realtime, 3d computer graphic display technology.

Imagine your brain being flooded with interactive, 3D realtime graphics fed by 6 super bright, high resolution projectors, pumping out a combined 8.3 M pixels, in a 360 degree, 70 meter dome above your head--with a killer digital sound system to boot.

Since the dome projection display system is realtime3D, interactive with both OpenGL and DirectX backends, Alex and the team have big plans for the Dome. The most notable plan is to tap into the vast pool of local talent and provide a big huge digital sandbox to play in developing innovative content. We will be announcing more details in the October timeframe but will be publishing the interface specs much sooner. To get on this list, send and email to: sockets@chabotspace.org stating you wish to be on the announcement list. I'll be there all nights and gladly will discuss the program with you. I look forward to seeing you there.
