SIGGRAPH 2006 Ideas

I'm interested in hearing from the CG community about potential new programs or program areas that might be included in the 2006 Conference Committee. You can comment here or email chair-s2006@siggraph.org. Also, stop by the get involved Wednesday afternoon of the conference week and talk to me, John Finnegan, about being a part of the conference in 2006. Also, we will be locating the conference in Boston, MA for that year!

Back in ´98 SIGGRAPH changed my life, and the perception I had of the world. I am excited that now there is a blog, as I´ll be able to follow things a lot closer!

Funny I should find it while reminiscing (and sharing) some SIGGRAPH03 exhibits through a Creativity and Technology blog I run in Barcelona. I can´t think of new program areas that aren´t already covered, but we will let you know if we think of any. There´s a whole bunch of multimedia designers over here for whom the computer screen got too small, and are looking for ways to break out of it in creative ways...

Congratulations for opening this Blog, once again, and keep up the good work!!

One of the best additions to SIGGRAPH 2004 was the Poster Session, though when time with the authors was scheduled was not, IMHO, optimal.

During the sesssion, I discussed with the session chair why Posters were so important, and how other venues had changed over the years. I learned that Sketches & Apps were originally meant to be a place for "late breaking" or "simple" presentation, but had become a place to submit papers rejected from the Papers sessions. Alas, Posters might go down the same path and become a place to submit papers rejected by Papers and/or Sketches & Apps. I suggest that some sort of guidelines be put in place in order to avoid this cascading effect.

One idea that comes to mind is to state that a paper submitted to a session, and rejected, cannot be submitted to a "lower order" session unless the reviewers recommend this. In fact, come to think of it, perhaps reviewers in one session tier can, upon rejection, automatically shuffle the submission to the next tier.

The bottom-line is, we don't want to discourage folks with "small" but "meaningfull" ideas from submitting their work. But I'm fearful that if safegaurds are not put in place this is precisely what will occur.

As for when to schedule a "meet the authors" poster session, I suggest timing it to coincide with the lunch break. At a aconference I attended, many years ago, the poster sessions were scheduled for the cogge/tea breaks. In fact, the refreshment stations were actually intermingled with the bulletin boards, causing folks to walk around with their beverage and snacks, and talk with the authors. Maybe we could get Starbucks to setup a stand in the middle of the Posters area. Imagine the possibilities.

Lastly, I feel there needs to be a third level to the Computer Animation Festival, to allow even more entries to be viewed. Perhaps kiosks could be setup which showed works accepted, in general, but not in either the Animatio or Electronic Theaters, as a continuous loop. Large flat screens would probably be the best for this.

Thank you so so much for bring it to Boston for next year. As a student on that coast it makes it 10 times easier to get too. But I am still try to get myself to LA for 2005 and can't wait to see if for myself. Professors have told me great things about SIGGRAPH and now I hope to experience.

Internet has emerged has the primary medium. Also very powerful and interesting XML technologies for displaying 2D and 3D online graphics are emerging. For example, W3C’s SVG and X3D or Macromedias MXML/Flash or Microsoft’s Avalon/XAML to name a few. I wish to see they are given more coverage. I believe, they are going to dominant computer graphics technologies of the future.

Furthermore, most people don’t know yet, but even today innovative technologies exist in stealth mode that allows developers to create superior graphics intensive application than ever thought possible (even using UNIX/X11 or Microsoft Windows-API) at fraction of the cost. I am not at liberty to provide any more information with out a strict NDA today.
