This talk makes an introduction to China’s first 3D stereoscopic animated feature “Legend of a Rabbit”, winner of 2 top film awards in China in 2011, and the Chinese animation most widely sold ever internationally. Andy Dong, co-director of the film, and principle of the animation studio who produced the film, will take us thru the production pipeline, showing demos of some the stereoscopic techniques used, a facial expression demo, and also an intro to the rendering farm used. Elliot Tong, producer and head of international sales and marketing for the studio, will discuss the challenges facing independently-made 3D animation in the current market place and what producers can do to get into more markets with their films. The team will also present the latest clip from the “Rabbit 2”, the sequel.
Andy Dong, Beijing Century Colorful Butterfly Design Animation Ltd.
Dong Da Ke Andy is a graduate of the Animation School of the Beijing Film Academy. After he graduated, he wrote and directed three TV animated series for Tianjin Film Studio and won SARFT’s award of excellence in animated series in 2005, 2006, and 2007. In 2008 he was hired by Beijing Century Colorful Butterfly Animation Design Ltd. and directed the animated series and feature film of “Butterfly and the Veggie Fairies” . “Legend of a Rabbit” is Century Colorful Butterfly’s first full length 3D stereoscopic production, and is also China’s first 3D Stereoscopic animated feature. Dong served as Co-Director and Technical Director of the film, which won 4 awards as Best Animated film in China and internationally. Dong is currently working on the sequel to “Legend of a Rabbit”, Rabbit 2.
Elliot Tong, Tianjin North Film Group
Elliot Tong is producer of “Legend of a Rabbit 3D”, China’s first 3D stereoscopic animated feature. Tong is also responsible for the international sales and marketing of the film, resulting in a record sales of over 60 territories worldwide. “Legend of a Rabbit” won two top film awards in China as Best Animated film this year, and is the first Chinese animated film to engage a Hollywood voice cast. Before joining Tianjin North, Elliot Tong was a production executive at Emperor Motion Pictures, Focus Films (Andy Lau’s company) and Star Overseas (Stephen Chow’s company). Most notably responsible for films such as “Ichi the Killer”, “Kung Fu Hustle”, and the “Focus First Cuts”series. Tong is currently producing “Rabbit 2”, the sequel to “Legend of a Rabbit”, with production set up in Beijing and the Tianjin Animation Park. Elliot Tong has a BFA in Film/TV from New York University.
