THE VRML FILES

The Real-Time Art Objects is an exhibition on the World Wide Web. It represents, in part, the realization of work I began 28 years ago. I had a paper published on this work which is in the Proceedings of The IEEE, 1974. The VRML files will only work with the combination of Netscape and Cosmoplayer. We had poor results with Internet Explorer and World View. The variation between browsers in the PC world presents many problems. Several of the files have sounds which can be quite large and affect the downloading time.

I suggest you experiment among the first nine files. They do not have texture maps. Texture maps affect the update rate and the dynamics of the motion. A reduction in the window space will improve performance.

The core VRML files were developed by Matthew Lewis of the Advanced Computing Center For The Arts And Design, OSU. The work is a collaboration between Matt and myself. Matt has helped me to understand basic concepts and issues involved with VRML. He has also made invaluable suggestions about how to exploit his software. Mike Miller of our Emerging Technologies Laboratory provided the expertise to generate the sounds and he also gave me direction on this aspect of the project. Additional software support came from the technical support staff of ACCAD and others. Dr. Stephen May's language AL, a procedural programming language, enabled me to create the scenes and the texture maps. He also developed for me a number of functions or tools which I use in all of my work. Peter Carswell, Steve Spencer, Steve Anderson and Dr. Ferdi Scheepers also provided me with special software tools. Kevin Reagh of Horizons Video and Film helped me with suggestions about the design of the files. I want to give thanks to Dr. Wayne Carlson, Director of ACCAD, for access to the computing resources which makes all of my work possible.
