ACM SIGGRAPH FY2005 Financial Statement
FY 2005 Financial Statement by Tony Baylis, ACM SIGGRAPH Treasurer
This document outlines the financial position of the ACM SIGGRAPH organization as of the end of the 2005 fiscal year, ending on 30 June 2005.
Budget Actual
Revenue $8,501,863 $8,324,670
Expenses $8,468,284 $8,303,434
Surplus/Loss $ 33,579 $ 21,256
The 2005 fiscal year ended with a slight surplus of $21k versus a budgeted surplus of $34k, as shown in the above table, due to the financial success of the ACM SIGGRAPH 2004 conference and to the continued financial restraint shown by the organization.
We have faced significant financial challenges over the last few years and need to continue to work to maintain our financial stability. Working to a balanced budget each year is a responsible position, and one to which we strive.
Our organization depends on membership dues and financial returns from successful sponsored events (like the annual conference), as well as revenue from downloads of ACM SIGGRAPH material in the ACM Digital Library for its income stream. This income provides the organization with the ability to fund all of our activities, including the sponsoring of more than forty conferences and workshops held throughout the world each year, educational outreach, student and professional chapters, and our website.
Our financial position, overall, is good: we have a strong reserve fund (all ACM special interest groups must maintain a reserve fund, a percentage of our average budget, to be used during difficult financial times) and our annual conference is on a more stable financial footing, after losses in 2001 and 2002. We haven't raised our membership dues in over ten years, however, and during that time, we've grown dependent upon the financial health of the annual conference to maintain the overall financial health of the organization.
We must return the organization to a solid financial position. This will include the following actions on our part:
- reduced dependence upon the financial success of the annual conference;
- maintaining the balance between member dues and member benefits; and
- maintaining our mandated fund balance with ACM.
To maintain the balance between member dues and member benefits (i.e., ensuring that the cost of the benefits of membership do not exceed the membership dues), we have implemented a one-time increase in membership dues, from $27.00 to $35.00, and are planning on smaller increases over the next several years to keep pace with inflation. We are looking at ways to increase member benefits and enhance the member experience, especially via our new website.
